Blog Assignment for Sept. 13-17
What is your reaction to the following August 13 front-page news article in the Houston Chronicle? What do the before and after pictures suggest? (make sure you click on 1 or 2 at the top left of the picture) Real-World Life Lessons
I think that it is a great thing that A&M is trying to expand its diversity and trying to model the Texas population. I also think that the before and after pictures suggest that he has grown and matured throught his years in college. I also think maybe there is a bit of conformity in his look. Before, he looked as he would at home and after he looks like most college students at that campus. In my mind i think the way he looks as he leaves A&M is a combonation of both, conformity and maturing.
My first reaction was excitement for the diversity of the University and how he was able to get in a&m as well. Being able to get through his challenges even though hes been through a lot was inspiring for not just me but other students going through the same situations or close to it. In the two pictures its definitly a huge difference from before and after. But to me it seems like he has matured and realized whats important in life.
I think that this could be viewed from two lenses. It is great that college campuses are opening their minds and breaking down pre-existing racial barriers. However, I believe the pictures may be viewed as assimilation into the popular culture. I hope that for his sake he was concerned about looking professional rather than abandoning his individuality.
Its a good thing Texas A&M is expanding the diversity there. Its a great school and im glad they let him in. All the things hes gone through and delt with has probably been hard for him and living in third ward isnt all that exciting, its really sad there and how they live is terrible. Hes come a long way since then.
I find the article to be inspiring. If someone with much more troubles than me can get into A&M, then I, with hardly any troubles compared to him, should be able to get into my dream of going to the Art Institute of Houston.
I reacted like, wow this is a college that wants students to really succeed. There was a huge difference between the after and before pictures. The before picture Jacob didn't even look like he was intelligent. You would never think he's a college student. The after picture shows how he grew in to a young man. Seems, like he was always judged from the before picture. I also agree with Christina, it's a good thing that they broke the racial barrier. They're willing to make you successful no matter the color of your skin.
Texas A&M is the college to go to, or at least I think so and want so. Seeing his picture's made me think to myself of what a transformation he made himself go through with the help of other's. He went from being one of those 'thug' looking kid's to a decent and respectable young man. Seeing how he dressed and his hair in the first picture was frightening and gave off a bad impression. But after seeing what he look's like now, you realize that everybody can be a decent person . Also, his g.p.a. being higher than a 3 isn't the best it could be. Having said that, knowing he was admitted into A&M, anybody could possibly do it. But also Texas A&M is in the midst of diversifying it's student's, which are mostly white. So it could possibly handicap the admittance of a white student compared to a minority.
Looking at the before and after picture really shocked me because when i started reading it said he was one of the top graduates in Yates High school. And looking at his before picture was kind of hard to believe, and i think its such a good thing that A&M is trying to make their university more diversity because thats one thing that is very important, well to me it is. Because as a hispanic i dont want to be going to a school with like one raze cause that just makes yopu feel uncomfortable.
When i saw the before picture my reaction was it looked like he didn't really care too much about anything, real relaxed with baggy shorts and his hair pulled back. But in the after picture it looks like he is serious about his education and seems like he has matured alot threw A&M. I also think its insane on how much how you dress, matters of how people look at you. Look. A haircut and a change in outfit, along with a smile and now he is not constantly asked for his student id card.
The picture before and after was a very big changed. The first picture looks like he was going the wrong way for his future, but the second picture is just completely a different thing. Jacob had changed his life into a whole different style. A&M is a good college and reading the article got me thinking life in college is very different than highschool.
I think it is a good idea for colleges to be more diverse because it is preparing you for the real world and it shows you that not everyone is like the people you grew up with. the pictures show that from the rime you start college to the time you finish, you change so much and when you leave you are a full functioning adult with responsibilities.
I like how colleges are becoming more diverse because it will give everyone a chance to learn more about other people who are different. The pictures prove that anyone with any background can achieve what they want and are able to learn more about themselves while they are in college. It is the chance to become an adult and learn about how much responsiblity you will be taking on once you're older. College is an opporutnity to understand the ways of society and how to become a better, more mature, and successful version of yourself. I think Jacob has found out what is more important in life and got his priorities straight.
My first reaction was wow hes very relaxed and not caring so much about his schooling and his studies. When i saw the second picture i thought wow what a smart young man looking at his bright future ahead. He is happy to have gone to such a good school like A&M.
I think its avery good thing that there doing that. it gives students that would never normally have that kind of oppruntinty a chance to go to college. It really shows how the right circumstances can change a man for the better.
I like how A&M is being more diverse and i hope it keeps expanding. Jacob is a great role model to high school students all around Texas to try and make a difference. The before picture i made the mistake of judging him, but then i figured out he is a very intelligent person who worked hard to get where he is today.
In the before picture he looked like he was still in high school. Very immature and maybe even not ready for college. In the after picture he looks like a nice functioning member of society. Way to go A&M. Just kidding Ms. Flores UT is cool too.
The difference in the first picture and the second was shocking. In the after picture he looked very sophisticated and intelligent, rather than in the before picture where he does not portray the image of an intelligent business man of any sort. I think it is great that A&M is trying to have a more diverse group of students. I agree with Eli, i would not want to be at a school made up of only a small percentage of my race, it would just be uncomfortable. But since A&M is trying to be more diverse anyone can go there. As this story shows it doesnt matter where you come from as long as your willing to work hard everyone has a shot.
I'm glad that Texas universities are making an effort to be more diverse. I didn't realize how predominantly white they are. The before and after pictures were pretty shocking. He looks like a brand new person. I'm glad he was able to get out of the third ward a new, successful college graduate. I think the pictures suggest that college can change a person better by giving people opportunities and teaching them about the real world.
I really like that universities are diversifying their population. Although I do believe that we should all be treated equally to get into college, and our acceptance should reflect our grades not our skin color. With time though will come a very diversified world.
taylorhansen- i agree. He changed his whole persona while learning at A&M
sreynolds- he definitely is a role model for kids out there who don't believe that they can do anything with their life.
Its good to know that universities are becoming more diversed. It shouldnt matter what race or skin color one has to be accepted to a school but how much hard work one is willing to put forth. Jacobs apperance seemed at first as if he didnt care about school and as if he is relaxed. But now his apperance shows how much of a hard worker he is to achieve his goals.
i think that this is a great article to encourage people that even if life throws you a couple of curve balls there is always a way to go on with your life and learn from the experiences that you have. It is obvious what college has done for Jacob. It has made him mature and see the real world around him. I think that his college experience has changed him both physically and mentally. Taylor Hansen- I agree that one of the most helpful part of college is the life experiences that it gives you. You do learn a great deal from the interaction that you have with others and watching the people around you and their mistakes. Longnecker- I also agree with what you said about acceptance into college. It should be the your accomplishments that get you into a college not just because of your skin color. But I do think that everyone should have the same oppertunities to get into college. Katie Spitzer 3rd period
Parker McVay 5TH- I think this story is great. Because there are people that take advantage of getting a college education. People that don't know what it's like to come from a tough background think they don't have to work in order to succeed. Also this proves that in America no matter what differences you have, you can reach however high you are willing to work for. In the first picture, his body language says depressing and boring. In his recent one he looks happy and excited about what is to come in the future
@ChristinaG83: I don't think its assimilation because in the pictures he looks happier the way his life has turned out.
@JGarza: I totally agree, i think admission shouldn't be on what you can't control, but on what you can such as hard work.
I think that the article is a great step forward for Texas A&M. Its fascinating to hear about how college has helped someone not just gaining knowledge for a job/ career but life lessons being learned as well. The pictures shows to me that he looks happier in the more recent one rather than the before one where he looked as if he didnt care.
Students who are accepted at A&M and UT their first year, more than likely (were talking about 90%) are in top ten percent of their school. The school's population represents kids who succeed in their school. It would be nice if it represented the population of Texas, but not at the expense of successful students.
I think it's a great thing that te university let him in having a greater diversity. Showing people that there is more to people other than the looks or color of their skin.
I agree with Jenny, usually when u think of people going to big colleges like a&m or ut you think of the top ten percent rule allowing them to automatically being accepted.
I agree with jgarza, it's good to know that he was accepted for his hard work. That proves to me that if you put your heart into anything then you can do it.
My reaction to this truly inspiring picture was that anybody can do whatvever they put their mind to. I see that if you just puruse your goal it will eventually become a reality. In the before picture Jacob looks as if he doesn't care about school, but in the after picture he looks like he has just accomplished his goal in life. The before and after pictures suggest that if you are not entirely into school you will not succeed. By fixing your attitude and even image it will cause more motivation to become a success.
@JGarza- I agree that the school is more diverse but Just because someone may change their appearance doesn't mean they have changed their attitude towards school.
@samvanzytveld1234- I agree with you because this is a great step forward for A&M by Jacob changing his attitude towards school. This looks good for the school and makes more people, no matter what race, want to come to this school and make their goal come alive.
well iam glad that Texas A&M is becoming more diverse. i think that the before and after pictures show how Texas A&M can change people the for the better and become a more serious person.
I think The picture shows an awesome improvement! It looks to me as if hes turned his life around for the better but it also teaches you the old saying " dont judge a book by its cover" because even though he didnt look as if he could attend a school like a&m, He had the smarts to be able to!
My first reaction was anybody could do it. Everyone has a chance to make up for the mistakes they have made in the past. So just actually seeing somebody that proved to the world and his self that even a guy with a past can change his life around.
I LOVE how colleges are trying to diversify their schools because I myself am hispanic. I make really good grades but not compared to top 10% of students, not making me as qualified to get accepted into a top school. It also makes me feel better that schools are trying to do this because it makes me believe I have a better chance of getting into a college.
The before and after pictures just show that someone can truly change and have a life changing experience. He came from a "bad" part of town and he was able to get into a great university and graduate. People can always change for the better
I agree with andrewgoulden, the fact that they're trying to diversify A&M does give people who wouldnt normally have a chance, an opportunity of a lifetime.
I also agree with EGerow, even though he did look like a college student at first, he apparently was a very smart student and earned his reward. Amber Isaac Per. 6
I like to see that A&M is beoming diverse and giving all race a chances to make it in life. When I seen the before picture I seen a young black boy that didnt care about his eduction but when i look at the before picture i seen that someone had told him that he only have 2paths that he can pick from one that might lead you to jail death or wateva and the other one that he can make something out of him self. i agree with aisaac for the diversity of the school. but did the student in the article really work for his grades or did A&M just pull him in because they needed him?? i am happy to see that he turned his thoughts on life around and is thinking more to the future.
i liked the article, i felt like it was inspiring to see how changed and matured through his experience at a&m. The pictures are an example of everything he over came and all the lessons he learned doing so.
College and education has made a drastic change with this young man. It seems like he had a choice to make when first attending the school. Did he want to stay the way he was? Or Did he want to turn his life around and get it on the right track? As we all can see he chose the second one!
My first reaction was "Wow,thats great that they're expanding the diversity to the University and that it was awesome that he was able to get into A&M.I think that the before and after pictures sure have impacted how he is today which is more matured.
I agress with andrewgoulden that it's a great thing that they're expanding the diversity, because it gives people the oppertunity to go to college and get an education.
I also agree with K.Clark this man had to make a wise decision on what he wanted for his future,it was good he choose the second choice, because it sure did pay off.
Thats go that Texas universities are becoming more diverse. The first picture was like wooww! and the second one he was now wearing a polo and khails. Seems like he is doing welll. he's a good representative to show you can make it from anywhere and whatever back ground as long as you try and never quit.
Im not shocked at all to be honest. If you take any person and take them out of the enviorment or negative influence in there life and put them in a place that is positive and will give them a chance to succeed,As long as they really want a change for themselves they will do for themselves without any help even. And the before and after is funny to funnier. In his thug picture he looked like one of the kids from fat albert stuck some tweezers in a light socket. And the professinal looking photo looked like Steve Ercel when he got his first kiss.
It's a big deal on how much school can change someone. It's neat to see how someone can turn everything around. I kinda laughed when I saw the pictures because I thought to myself if he could do it then I could, but then the way he changed his appearance wowed me.
My reaction to the story was amazing. How he came from one of the baddest neighborhoods in Houston and he made it through college. He made a big differnce in his life. By the pictures it looks like he has changed alot in his impression.

My first reaction was "Wow,thats great that they're expanding the diversity to the University and that it was awesome that he was able to get into A&M.I think that the before and after pictures sure have impacted how he is today which is more matured.
ReplyDeleteI agress with andrewgoulden that it's a great thing that they're expanding the diversity, because it gives people the oppertunity to go to college and get an education.

ReplyDeleteIt's a big deal on how much school can change someone. It's neat to see how someone can turn everything around. I kinda laughed when I saw the pictures because I thought to myself if he could do it then I could, but then the way he changed his appearance wowed me.
ReplyDeleteMy reaction to the story was amazing. How he came from one of the baddest neighborhoods in Houston and he made it through college. He made a big differnce in his life. By the pictures it looks like he has changed alot in his impression.
