A Farewell to Arms - K Classes Only - Blog #7 - Ch. 9

I could give an entire test on this one chapter alone – did you grasp its significance as you were reading? There is a significant speech about war and the nature of defeat – THIS topic comes up again and again in the novel, both in relation to and apart from war. At this point, what do the men feel about the war? Discuss Frederic’s stance on the issue and what his opinions reveal about him as a man.
Respond thoughtfully to this prompt and to TWO classmates' responses.

  1. I think men feel war is harsh, but necessary. I believe that's Frederic's stance on the issue also. War isn't something people enjoy but its been part of our history since the beginning of time. Someone has always been envious of someone else, and they'll fight in order to get what they want. Its the ugly truth.

  2. I think the men feel that war is ridiculous but it needs to be done in order to gain what we are fighting for. All Frederic wants to do is be with Catherine but at the same time he knows what he has to do and isn't a coward. War will always go on, it's just something thats apart of our lives.
@Daniela I agree with you War is harsh but necessary.

  3. After Frederic comes back to the front, all the men are tired and sick of the war. None of the men have the war on their minds; Frederic has Catherine on his mind, just as Vicky said. He just wants to stop everything and just be with her somehow. Everyone wants the war to stop, but it is necessary, like what Daniela said.

  4. I think the war has had a negative impact on the men and they are exhausted and drained. I believe that Frederic is a hardworking man and would not give up regardless of his true feelings. I do agree with Daniela war is harsh but absolutely necessary for the future.

  5. The men are sick of the war, but know that it is going to last for a long time, and understand that war will really never end. I agree with Vicky when she says that the men believe that the war is ridiculous, but they understand that it needs to be done. Like Derick and Daniela said, the war is harsh but necessary for the future.

  6. They feel war is is harsh and brutal but necesary. Like Daniela said war has been apart of our history for centuries. However, there comes a time in war, like Lacey siad, where it begins to feel pointles and everyone just wants to go home.

  7. @Lindsay
I agree, war can be pointless at times.

    @Austin
    War is ridiculous.

  8. It is no question that almost all the men there are very anti-war, but at the same time they know that sometimes there has to be war. The other men's interest in the war is very disconnected. They believe that the war could be stopped if one country backs, but nobody does, therefore it continues. Frederic has the same opinion as most other men, but I believe that Frederic has more war apathy as the others.

@Daniela: War is harsh but necessary. At first I didn't believe that, but the more we talked about it in class I realized that it is true.

@Derick: I agree with you that it does have a lot of negative impact. That is why many war veterans had PTSD after combat.

  9. I agree with Danielle that war is harsh and tough. But I think that the men are sucked into war because they think it is something that will make them more of a man.

  10. All the men are fighting for their country, but they are mainly doing it because they have a need to fight. That it's the right thing for a man to do. Frederic doesn't really care about the war in my opinion he's just fighting/working because that's the kind of man he is. He's going to work hard and doing a good job. I agree with Danielle and Shelby.

  11. I think all the men are sick and tired of the war but war is part of life.
I agree with daniela that war is harsh but necessary because without war we wouldn't be ware we are today and I agree with brittany because the men are fighting for there countries but also because they are men so they feel it is there duty to fight.

  12. I think men go in thinking that war is great and they are fighting for a good cause but once they get in the war they realize the cruelty destruction and death it brings. Then men start questioning is all the casualties worth it and are we fighting for a good cause. Then it's on going and they are tired and feel like it's never going to end and when it does they should expect another war.

  13. I think all the men are doing it because they feel they have to, but are also tired of it.
I agree with Brittany and I agree with michole that the men go in thinking war is going to be great and they fight for a reason but really it is not so great.

  14. I feel that all of the men, though they are soldiers in themselves, are all pro-peace. They have lived through one of the harshest wars or are currently dealing with it and are sick and tired of it. They know it is taxing and harsh in unimaginable ways, yet they know that it is a constant throughout history and will continue to be. I agree with Austin in that they know that war itself will truly never end, they will just move onto another thing to fight over in what is most likely another country. I agree with Dallas because they feel they have to fight, no matter what they truly feel.

  15. I believe that almost all the men are Anti-War and if not they became Anti-War from experiences during battle. Even though they don't want to fight they know it is necessary almost an unspoken rule that they must fight for their country.

  16. I think that men feel obligated to fight in wars because it's their duty, and if they somehow participate in war they will feel more of a man. Humans just always want more than they can have so that's why we have war in the first place. Frederic is just fighting the war even though he doesn't want to because he feels like it's the right thing to do and it keeps him busy.

I agree with Dallas and Daniela war is pointless, but somehow neccessary to keep the world sane.

  17. I think that war is starting to wear on people, they realize that war is horrible but that it has to be done. Most of the men are not for the war in here.

@brittany I agree with what you said about war making a man feel more like a man.
@Nichole I think your right that men think it will be all glorious and when they get there its a harsh reality.

  18. i think that the war is starting to affect the people as they realize nothing is gained except loss of life and many other terrible things.
brittany i agree with what you said about war making a man feel like the perfect man.

  19. I think that the men at first were very narrow minded about the war but soon realized that it was something bigger. Now the men know that war will never stop and have set their minds to something else.
