Summer School - Blog 1 - How do College Freshmen Perceive the Differences between High School and College
Read the following report by Drew Appleby, Ph. D. Perceptions Report.
Respond in an education format your opinion on the report. In addtion to your own response, make a comment on one classmate's response.
College Freshmen perceive differences between high school and college by seeing how much more work they give in college rather than in high school. College is much harder than high school. In college you must do most of your work outside of school. College freshman have to adapt to their new academic environment. They also have more responsibility than high school students.
College Freshmen seem to fret more over starting college than they do with starting high school. At first, they may dread college because they have to worry about getting accepted, how much money they have to spend, the scholarships they may or may not acquire, and location. Of course, there are many other things they could also be worrying about that make high school worries seem trivial. Despite all the worrying, they are also relieved to finally be moving on to a new chapter in their life and are glad they get to choose which college they would like to go to, the hours they will attend classes, and most of the time even living arrangements (I'm sure we'd all be happy to choose where we live and who we live with). @Christian, I think the responsibilities between high school and college students might even each other out depending on the circumstances. However, college students do generally have many more responsibilities when considering only the individual, rather than the student portion of their lives.
Many of these college students base the differences in the work and time given. They say even with less time the work triples and the time is shorter. You have to be more determined in college to get the work done. In highschool you have way more time than given in college makin college much more difficult.
There is a huge difference between high school and college, in one hand high school areyour "Mess arounds years" and you might not get as much homework or even have to study for some exams or test. One doesnt have to worry so much about failing and class which in turn can affect your potential life career. On the other hand college is the real deal, where if a student decides to skip a night of studying it can greatly affect his/her future in that class. In college studying and homework are two things that can become the differece between being successfull or not. This is where the most important decisions in life come into play and a student cannot play around.
From the Point Of View of a college freshman just being into the independent ocean of the college societies self educated forte "sink or swim" method is self reliability. In college you basically have to already be in a real world real life independent state of mind society to be able to handle all the extra work and time management that you will have to weigh on your own work load. Other wise based on the article you will be in for a educational shock and the professor will more than likely show no sympathy as your high school teacher would and there for as mentioned early it is a "sink or swim" test of independence.
@*yanni* I agree because most often then not they were not on their own in high school and had someone to depend on but once they get to college their in a way...alone.
When you go through high school you are on a name basis with your teachers who are there for you and to help you but when you move onto college it's a completely different story because you no longer have teachers that will take time out of their schedule to help you, yet alone even know you by your first name. College students not only have a lot more work to do, but also have a lot less time to do it which just creates more stress. On top of having a lot of school work to do, most college students are out on their own, having to worry about bills and a job, etc. when a majority of high school students don't have to worry about anything like that.
My view on the differences between college freshmen and high school are simple.
High school gives you 4 years to mess around, buckle down, and finally do some work. Were giving alot of freedom throughout those 4 years to turn in assignments. Were giving study guides to help us pass test. If you know how to take a test well you do good in high school. High school is all about test taking, that's why we work on that so much. High school doesn't really much prepare you for college too.
When you enter college, instead of being taught out of the book your being taught how to read the book (From a student from the article). His statement is extremely true. The majority of the work you do in college is outside of the classroom because the professor takes 5 minutes to explain and then lets his/hers student do whatever they want, Its up to you whether you want to read, study, or doing something.
@Christain, I completely agree with what you put. College students are given more responsibility.
@christian i agree work in college is way harder than in high school and they do have more responsibility because a lot have jobs or other things to take care of, also did some research and found out that almost 50 percent of students drop out or think about dropping out in the first semester so its proves how hard college really is.
College freshman have more resposibility and more work. It is harder for them because they don't have as much help as us high schoolers. Also they have to adapt to a new and enviroment and they also have to adapt to the way they work and where they work. I agree with AlvenRamos that half of the college dropouts dropout because college is hard for them. Another reason why college is harder for them us that they are just told what is done and when it's due. A lot of the work in college is done outside so they don't get to ask their teachers for help.
In high school the work is not as hard than it is incollege I have an older brother who goes Tulane and he says the work in college is 10xs harder and also due in a shorter amount of time, espescially coming in as a freshman everything is fast past. High shcool most of the kids don't even care they either half do the work or jus blow it off and don't do it all!!!
There's a big difference between being in high school and being a college freshman. In high school you don't have as much responsibility, everything is more laid back, and you learn everything you need to know inside the class. In college you have to work hard and learn everything on your own, outside of class. In college you have a lot more responsibility because you don't have anyone to push you to do your homework you just have to do it all on your own.
The Huge difference between being a high school student and a college freshman, like in high school the work is not hard and plus you learn everything in the class and plus. In college the work is more hard and you need to learn everything on your own outside the class and also you have to be responsible because there is no one to push you to do the work and homework.
I agree that there is a difference between being in high school and being a freshman in college. Not all the work, but most of it, is pretty chilled in high school. We've gone through the topics together as a class and work on it for days. The teachers easily explain an answer to any question we may have. In college the teacher explains the subects briefly and may answer some questions you have but are also brevity. You have to do the work on your own, it's harder, and due in a shorter time period.
I pretty much agree with everyone's comments. College and high school are two different things. I believe you do more work and you have to take more of your time out as college freshman to learn the work you are doing. Some people think school is the same but wherever you go its different. High school is just a preparation for college and you have to study way more in college than high school.
As a freshman in college you are going to expect many changes and differences from your highschool experience. The first thing you will notice is that you will no longer be constantly reminded by your teacher to do something. The other main difference is the time and manner in which you must manage your work. In college you must be responsible, and show some real effort.
