A Farewell to Arms - K Classes Only - Blog #7 - Ch. 9

I could give an entire test on this one chapter alone – did you grasp its significance as you were reading? There is a significant speech about war and the nature of defeat – THIS topic comes up again and again in the novel, both in relation to and apart from war. At this point, what do the men feel about the war? Discuss Frederic’s stance on the issue and what his opinions reveal about him as a man.
Respond thoughtfully to this prompt and to TWO classmates' responses.

L Classes Only - Blog #6

A Farewell To Arms - K Classes Only - Blog #6

Chapters 4, 5, and 6 introduce Frederic’s love interest and one of Hemingway’s most critically reviled (by Feminist critics at least) characters, Catherine Barkley. What is YOUR opinion of Catherine? Does her past play at all into her behavior – and does it make a difference in how you read her? Discuss their early relationship – their motivations, their level of trust, etc. What do you predict for their future (if you KNOW and spoil it, I will NEVER EVER EVER forgive you!)

Blog Assignment #4 - Sept. 12-16

On the tenth anniversay of 9-11, it's important to honor the memory of the men, women, and children who lost their lives on that fateful day.  After this past weekend, some of you may feel inundated with the past images, the tributes, and the news' stories.  Elie Wiesel, in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, stated the following:
"I remember: he (speaking of himself as a young boy) asked his father: 'Can this be true?' This is the twentieth century, not the Middle Ages. Who would allow such crimes to be committed? How could the world remain silent? And now the boy is turning to me: 'Tell me," he asks. 'What have you done with my future? What have you done with your life?' And I tell him that I have tried. That I have tried to keep memory alive, that I have tried to fight those who would forget. Because if we forget, we are guilty, we are accomplices."

In your blog assignment this week, write how you will not forget.  How will you make sure that 9-11 isn't just some tragic date from the past?

In addition to posting your comment, YOU MUST ALSO COMMENT TO ONE OTHER CLASSMATE'S COMMENT!  Good luck.  I know I won't forget.
